Christmas in January

School was closed on the Friday before Christmas Vacation so we completely enjoyed opening our gifts on Monday January 5th. Students shared that the Elves had sent letters to their homes in response to Santa letters we sent on December 15th. Things do happen at The Dream Factory!

Our Fieldtrip to Room 215

Our field trip becgan with a bus ride to Room 215 at our new school location. We took our bears there so that they could get use to the new classroom. they stayed in our lockers and are waiting for us to come on January 20th. We can't wait!!!

Today's final letter to Parents:

Dear Parents,

It really seems like only last week that I was writing you the first letter of the school year and yet here we are on the final day of first grade in Room 204 of The Dream Factory. Thank you for allowing me to work with and enjoy your child this school year. I consider it a privilege to have had this opportunity. Your child has made a difference to the makeup of our class and I hope that he or she will take many good memories (as well as skills) out of our classroom today and into the future.

Today your child will receive Summer Counts, a book that is loaded with good activities to help keep skills sharpened. Remember that Tuesday, June 10 at 2:00 is the West Hill Library Ice Cream Social. This is a great way to kick off summer reading with your child.

Please let me know if I can be of any service to you and your family in the coming years since you are now Dream Factory Alumni and Family. ;-)

A Cold Beaver Marsh

This had to be the coldest May visit to the Beaver Marsh to date. We could have worn gloves! In spite of the overcast and the threat of rain, Room 204 enjoyed the morning walk and experienced both the man-made features of the valley "canal - seen here" and the way that nature "the beavers" altered the landscape and habitat.

Throughout the hike we observed the Cuyahoga Valley Railroad Line in the distance that was the one we rode on in April on our Rivers, Roads & Rails experience. ;-)

This is the safe way to view the canal lock: up close and personal.

We found the worm in the walnut covering. Mr. Bennett found it in the covering which was green. It was white with a black stripe up in his head. I saw a lot of the worms in the walnut. I liked the walk on the field trip where we found the walnut.

7 Steps of Science - Step 3 and 4

The Third Step of Science is to "Take a Look" (observation).

Before we could Take a Look we had to define one of the words in our question: HOT. Mrs. Williams was visiting our class during science and shared that she had a good example of HOT. She was sweating. Our room was HOT. We collected the sweat from her cheek (see example 1 picture) and we compared it to the same area of William (he can sweat big drops when he's been outside after lunch). Mrs. Williams had 2 drops and William had none! We decided that we could not use Mrs. Williams as a good indicator because William was not sweating too. I asked the class if they knew of anything in their homes that could tell if the home was hot. Mersaydie's drew a picture of a thing on her wall that was round and had numbers on it. We located one of those things in our room too but ours was a rectangular prism. They found out that it was called a thermostat and that it measured how hot or cold the house was inside. I introduced a model of a large paper thermometer to the class and we decided that if the red line went up, that indicated that the room was getting HOT. Next I introduced a tool that would always tell the truth about the temperature and was not controlled by the teacher. It was a temperature probe from Vermier.

The Fourth Step of Science is "Write it Down" (data)

I demonstrated how the software on the computer collected the data from the probe and that it was much more accurate than the paper thermometer, the small glass thermometer in the thermostat. or Mrs. Williams and William. The next thing to do was to Take a Look and Write it Down so we decided to see if the lights overhead made the room HOT. The temperature probe helped us do both of these steps. The graph from the software showed that the closer we got to the lights the hotter it got. We proved that the lights did make the room HOT. The software and probe helped us with the next two Steps of Science but we ran out of time to discuss it.

We have three more parts of our Make a Guess to work on as well as the remaining Steps of Science. Please come back next week to read our posts and learn with us!

We are using the 7 Steps of Science to guide our science experiments. The first step is "Ask About Something" (question).
I asked the class this question today:

Why is our room HOT!

The Second Step of Science is to "Make a Guess" (hypothesis)

These are their guesses:

The fan blows cold air out of the room.
The lights make it hot.
The sun makes it hot.
Hot air comes in to the room from outside.

Connecting with Malaysia

We made our first Class2Class connection this evening at
The Dream Factory Room 204. Five students from our class came to school at 7:30 PM to visit with their buddies at The Dream Factory Room 39 in Malaysia. The picture at the right shows Derrick talking to Ben.

Parents came too and Miss Abernathy was pleased to see friends and students she had last year when she was in our building. To the right Garrison is talking to Daniel half way around the world!

It was a wonderful "first" experience for all who attended.

The Toad is Set Free

Julia brought a toad from her backyard into the classroom. Everybody saw the toad on the Smartboard. Then Mr. B. took the toad out of the box. Then Mr. B. took the toad to each table to show it. It made a whining sound like a weiner dog puppy. We will set it free after lunch.

The Heronry

We stopped by the Heronry for a break. We used our binoculars to see the blue herons on trees. We saw the nests. They looked like sticks stacked together. The blue herons necks were long. They glided from tree to tree. We enjoyed watching them.

The Akron U. students were in the gym at Portage Path School. They told us what kind of instruments they had. Then they played songs in the gym to the children. The children asked them questions. We were making vests for the Reading Roundup program. Second graders cut out our vests. Then we decorated them. We used crayons and scissors. They looked happy in their vests.

204 100's Day

Today was 100's Day. Mr. Bennett had old man clothes on. He was a 100 year old teacher. HIs hair was white and brown. Adriana had a blue and light blue coat because she was an old lady student. We were writing 100 words for 100's day. We counted cereal, dried maccaroni and marshmallows. It was a fun day!

COSI taught us about animals and taking care of them. We watched a movie about animals. We were trying to see if we saw all of the birds. There waee skeletons and fur too.
